According to the first view ‘Umrah’ should be done with an independent journey from the start, aside from that which is included in the Tamattu or Qiran types of Hajj. This is how it was performed by Prophet PBUH and His companions. The only exclusion to this was the special consent granted to Hazrat Ayesha RA because of her special circumstances. For when the Allah’s Messenger found her crying over the fact that she was disallowed from performing Umrah because of her menstruation He felt pity for her and ordered her brother ‘Abdur Rahman’ to aide her to Taneem in order for her to enter Makkah in a state of Ihram for performing Umrah. So, like others, she would be able to do Umrah in addition to her Hajj. The scholars of this view, the permission granted in this case were earmarked only for those who are in a similar situation like that of Ayesha RA and it cannot be extended generally.

The second group who has the different view from the first one holds a more liberal view. According to them: The permission granted to Hazrat Ayesha RA need not be interpreted in a restrictive sense. Moderately it can be taken as a general indulgence for anyone who wishes to perform extra Umrahs. Should they wish to do so they can go to the nearest boundary of Haram Sharif such as Taneem or elsewhere and return to Makkah with Ihram for Umrah.

The scholars of this group are guided in this ruling by the general spirit of liberality and latitude inherent in the Shariyah. It is the worth remembering the spirit of liberality that was evident in the way the Holy Prophet PBUH answered the various questions put why His companions in His farewell Hajj. He PBUH told each and every one who asked Him a question regarding the minor variations in the performance of rituals and He PBUH said: “Do so without any inhibition or blame”.

In the light of above mentioned Hadith, it is permissible to do extra Umrahs in this way if you wish to do so, especially if you are unable to undertake independent journeys for Umrah. One can do so either on the behalf of himself or on the behalf of his deceased parents by going to Taneem or another boundary of Haram Shareef or going to Madina and returning to Makkah with another Ihram.

Similarly, you can perform extra Tawafs for yourself and for others. However while doing so on the behalf of others you should formulate the Niyyah for the same in your own mind prior to doing it. In the case of extra Umrah, the Niyyah should be formulated when you assume Ihram for the same. According to many scholars, it is also allowed for us to bestow the rewards of our good deeds to our deceased parents and relatives. There is no limit it to the specific type of Ibadah such as Hajj and Charity it is perfectly fine to extend it to recitations of Quran, Umrah, Tawaf and so on.
