SR50,000 fine, 6-month jail for Umrah pilgrims overstaying their visas

Umrah pilgrims who stay in the Kingdom after the expiration of their entry visas will be fined SR50,000 each and imprisoned for six months before deportation, according to the General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat).

It called on all Umrah pilgrims to adhere to their travel schedules and leave the Kingdom before the expiration of their entry visas.

The Jawazat said that those coming on Umrah visas are not allowed to travel outside Makkah, Jeddah, and Madinah.

It warned citizens and residents against transporting, employing, sheltering or hiding those with expired Umrah visas.

A General Authority for Statistics (GaStat) report issued on Tuesday said that 19,079,306 pilgrims performed Umrah in 2017.

The statistical report quoting the registered data of the Ministry of Haj and Umrah said that 6,532,074 Umrah pilgrims came from outside Saudi Arabia.

The GaStat Umrah statistics bulletin for 2017 also showed that Ramadan is considered a top season during which Umrah is performed by people from inside Saudi Arabia, as 53.6% of total pilgrims performed Umrah in the holy month of fasting.

But over the course of thousands of years, the original names were lost and benefitting from that, Europeans who were good at adapting saw the chance and gladly took it, they took the discoveries and inventions and evolved into the successful, developed nation that they are now. In those times China was considered the farthest geographic state recorded. Following his teachings, centers of learning were founded in Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo, and Cordoba. These centers of learning and study later served as models for European universities.

Allah instructs His servants to contemplate, to look at the wonders in the universe and to try to understand.

“And on the Earth are signs for the certain in faith. And in yourselves. Then will you not see?” (Qur’an, chapter 51, verse 20-21)

The Muslims of that time had a thirst for knowledge and curiosity of what Allah had hidden for them on the Earth and in all of space and time. That led the Muslim scientists to establish that the world was round in the 9th century. The early expeditioners learned how to navigate by looking at the stars. The use of navigation tools and weather forecasting was the expertise of the Muslims. By studying the stars, they would make calendars and decide on the times of prayers.

Muslims believe that only Allah can create something alive, so they turned to shapes and patterns found in nature, and recreated them using geometry. This brilliant art of geometric shapes and arabesque patterns was used decorate a wide range of objects from every day items such as plates and candle sticks to large scale places like mosques and castles.

Arabesque is a method of art that uses basic tools like rulers and compasses to create symmetric abstract art, which is then commonly used to decorate mosques, pottery and textiles.

Calligraphy is the art of writing beautifully which came into being because the Muslims thought that the word of God when written must be as beautiful as can be made. For this reason, they would only let the most professional calligraphers to write God’s name and verses from the Holy Qur’an in buildings and different places. Calligraphy is now taught in universities as a subject.

Umrah is regarded as the minor pilgrimage ( Umrah ) or lesser pilgrimage to Makkah that can be carried out at any time during the whole year. Although the reward and merit of performing Umrah during the month of Ramadan is outstanding as compared to other Islamic months and the retribution is also equal to that of Hajj but it cannot be regarded as a substitute of Hajj.

The Arabic meaning of Umrah is to visit a voluminous place whereas according to Sharia, Umrah means to perform the prescribed rituals after acquiring the sacred state of ihram. Muslims from all over the world perform Umrah every year and visit the holy places of Makkah and Madina. Despite the fact that there is no obligation to perform Umrah but it is a Sunnah to perform Umrah at least once in a lifetime to earn great reward from Allah SWT.

Abu Hurairah (R) narrates that the Prophet(S) said:

“An Umrah to another Umrah will be redemption of sins for whatever (minor) occurs between them.” (Bukhari, Muslim).

This Hadith quite clearly explains the immense reward and blessings earned by performing Umrah. It cleanses one’s soul from all the past wrongdoings, committed intentionally or unintentionally and shows that Umrah serves as expiation for one’s sins whether major or minor. In addition to this, Allah is greatly pleased by those who walk His path with an intention of getting his pleasure and blessing and indeed Umrah is one of those means to earn Allah’s love.

The following Hadith speaks for itself and shows the immense love Allah has for his mankind.

Ibne Umar (R) narrates that Prophet (S) said:

“The warrior in the cause of Allah, the pilgrim and the one who is performing Umrah are all the delegation of Allah. He called them and they responded and they will ask of His bestowals and He will give it to them.” (Ibne Majah, Ibne Hibbaan)

Aisha (RA) said that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Whoever leaves his home only for the purpose of Hajj or Umrah and he dies, nothing will be presented to him nor will he have any accountability on the day of Reckoning and it will be said to him, enter into Jannah.” (Tabraani Baihaqi)

If one passes away on his way to Umrah or in between or after the completion of Umrah will not be questioned by Allah Almighty on the Day of Judgment and will enter the Jannah.

This is an absolutely astonishing and breath taking virtue of Umrah among many that the believing Muslim will get rewarded with by the utmost Grace and Mercy of Allah SWT. May all Muslims get the chance to undergo the sacred journey of Hajj and Umrah at least once in their lifetime! 'One Day in the Haram'

"One Day in the Haram," a 90-minute documentary, presents in detail how the Grand Mosque is run, covering the various departments such as the cleaning, IT, audio, maintenance, administration and Zamzam water systems.

“People don’t know how the Haram is incredibly organized and has one of the world’s most advanced systems operating the site,” says Abrar Hussain, writer and director of the film. “It’s one of the rare places in the world that operates continuously all year round.”

Most films about the Holy Mosque focus on the worshippers and the travelers’ experience while this film, after having done extensive research, presents the daily routine through the eyes of the workers, he says.

The film was made by Hussain along with Saudi executive director Abdulelah Al-Ahmary with a shared vision of creating a new kind of approach to depicting the Holy Mosque in the media.

The crew consists of filmmakers from the UK as well as locals based in Saudi Arabia who paid Makkah frequent visits to produce the film over a period of 18 months.

The trailer reveals an intimate examination of the staff and a modern style of cinematography.

“It was important to show the everyday cycle and present the natural environment of the Holy Mosque. The five prayers were important to create structure to the film,” says Hussain, adding that full access to the site granted by Imam Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais and the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque enabled the crew to complete filming all aspects of the mosque.

The crew refrained from using a tripod and used moving cameras instead to present the rapid flow of movement for “a real-feel experience”.

“The aim of the film is to increase people’s desire to visit and offer an experience of being in the Haram for the millions who haven’t visited yet,” adds Hussain.

The documentary also seeks to attract an international audience and participate in film festivals worldwide once it premieres this year.

Hussain, who lives in the UK, says there is lots of misinformation on Islam in the West. “This film not only aims to highlight the aesthetic beauty of the House of God but also show the ideals of the religion.”

The budget for the film that was produced by Arabian Pictures amounts to 250,000 British pounds (approximately SR1.27 million).

Commenting on his experience, Hussain, who has previously produced documentaries on Islam and traveled various countries to film other works, called his latest project “a great honor to work in the most important place in the world for Muslims.”

MAKKAH: Projects carried out by the government in Makkah and the holy sites are facilitating pilgrims’ movement and providing them with the services they need to complete their Hajj comfortably and easily.

The Makkah Development Authority has implemented 14 projects worth SR300 million ($80 million).

The most prominent projects are the third expansion of the Grand Mosque (the largest expansion in Saudi history), the Jamaarat facility, the Muaissem slaughterhouse, the shuttle bus service, Al-Mashaaer Metro, pedestrian routes separated from vehicle traffic, fire-resistant tents and the removal of slums.

The Jamaarat facility has attracted global attention for its advanced architectural construction and its ability to hold millions of people without any major incident.

Al-Mashaaer Metro is expected to accommodate more than 350,000 pilgrims this year. Maj. Gen. Hamid Al-Jahdali, assistant commander of Hajj security forces, said 9,500 soldiers and officers will help with crowd management at the metro.

“We have 17 trains, each has 12 vehicles, and each vehicle can accommodate 250 people, including 50 seats for the elderly and 200 standing,” he said.

“The total capacity of each metro is 3,200 passengers in nine stations. The total number of passengers will be 72,000 passengers per hour.”
