JEDDAH — Following the successful completion of Haj, Umrah packages 2017 have started arriving in the Kingdom, the Ministry of Haj and Umrah announced on Thursday.

The current Haj season will come to an end on Oct. 5 (Muharram 15) when the last flight carrying foreign Haj pilgrims will leave King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah.

The ministry has issued directives to all its agencies, sectors and Umrah establishments to raise their level of readiness to provide the best services to Umrah pilgrims and visitors.

The ministry announced its preparations for the upcoming Umrah season during a recent meeting between Minister of Haj Muhammad Saleh Banten and key players in the Umrah sector.

The meeting focused on the readiness of all sectors of the ministry for this season, especially with an unprecedented rise in the number of Umrah pilgrims last season, which was put at 6.7 million.

Despite the large number of Umrah pilgrims, there was a considerable drop in the number of Umrah visa overstayers, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the number of Haj pilgrims who arrived in Madinah totaled 595,635, according to an update issued by the National Establishment for Guides in Madinah on Thursday.

It said 32,336 pilgrims arrived in Madinah on Wednesday while 21,691 left the holy city on the same day for their countries.

With this the number of foreign pilgrims who left Madinah after visiting the Prophet's Mosque after Haj totaled 333,137 as of Wednesday. The number of pilgrims who remained in Madinah until Wednesday evening, the last day of the month of Dul Hijjah, exceeded 262,422, compared to 157,176 pilgrims on the same day last season.

Director General of Saudi Arabian Airlines Saleh Bin Nasser Al-Jasser made an inspection tour of Prince Muhammad Bin Abdulaziz Airport in Madinah on Thursday to check on the smooth departure of pilgrim flights from the airport.

The circumambulation (mataf) area was full of pilgrims performing their farewell Tawaf (Tawaf Al-Wadaa) before their departure from the holy lands. The expansion of the mataf facilitated an orderly, methodical and systemized performance of the important ritual.

The pilgrims and worshipers were able to perform Friday prayer in full security and safety.

Copies of the Holy Qur’an were available in large numbers and were easily accessible. Chilled Zamzam water and plastic tumblers were easily available. Cleaners kept the Grand Mosque clean. Allah is with whom ?

It is a saying attributed to Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him: “O Allah, what did he find who lost You, and what did he lose who found You?”

That is what I was looking for. I was searching for the qualities and the propensities of the people who Allah described Himself in the Holy Qur’an, as being with them. Because if Allah is with them, they could face any difficulty in this world with dignity, acceptance, and positivity. Because if Allah is with them, then what have they lost?

For Allah to be with you means that Allah is aware of your situation. He will support you, give you strength to endure, and He will grant you triumph at the end of the tunnel.

I wanted to explore the verses of the Qur’an in which Allah states that He is with certain groups of people. Can these attributes be cultivated and learned, so that I too may fit into this category of people? What traits do I need to acquire so that Allah will be with me?

I found only a few verses in the Qur’an that refer to people as specifically being with Allah.

The first verse I would like to mention is the following:
{Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good.} (Chapter 16, verse 128)

Some meanings get lost from the Arabic to English translation. The meaning behind this verse is that Allah is with those people who have taqwah and who have ihsan.

Taqwa is often translated as piety or God-fearing, but it is deeper than that. It is a heightened state of consciousness or being mindful of Allah at all times. Taqwa is the state of hyper-vigilance against falling into sin. It is the idea that a believer is always on guard and is alert of not committing any action that would earn the displeasure of Allah.

To have taqwa means you have an internal compass which directs you to the actions that please Allah and helps you avert the actions that displease Allah.

The companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) understood very well the meaning of having taqwa.

When one of the companions, Kaab, was asked about the meaning of taqwa, he explained it with this analogy; he said that when you walk through a thorny bush path wearing a long cloak, you take your steps very cautiously to avoid the thorns so you do not tear your clothing. That is the same as taqwa, walking carefully on the path to avoid falling into sin.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Fear Allah wherever you may be; follow up an evil deed with a good one which will wipe (the former) out, and behave good-naturedly towards people.” [At-Tirmidhi].

Taqwa and ihsan are two qualities of a true believer.

Ihsan, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us, is to worship Allah as if you see Him because even though you do not see Allah, He sees you.

It is more than just doing good; it is doing the best that you can do. It is attempting to perfect your character and your worship. It is treating others as you would wish them to treat you. It means being an exceptional spouse, parent, student, employee, and neighbor. Ihsan is to perform at the best of your capabilities at work, in school, and even in your car when you’re driving on the road.

In order for Allah to be with us, we need to live by the principle of fulfilling our fullest potential: in family relationships, education, work, and in our spiritual connection with Allah.

Sometimes, ihsan also means that you not only do what is required and expected of you, but that you go above and beyond. Let’s look at some examples. If you are given a task and a deadline from your employer,ihsan is to complete the task outstandingly and to hand it in before the deadline.

In your spiritual life, ihsan can mean that you not only pray the five obligatory prayers, but you also pray the additional voluntary prayers.

Another verse in the Qur’an describes a group of people whom Allah is with.

{O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.} (Chapter 2, verse 153)
Allah is with the patient, and Allah loves those who are patient.

Patience is one of the noblest qualities of the believers. In almost every verse in the Qur’an that describes the traits of the people who will abide in Paradise, Allah mentions patience.

Abu Said al-Khudri relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “None is granted a greater and more comprehensive gift than patience.”

It is not easy to be patient in times of hardship and to refrain from complaining and despairing; that is why the reward for patience is so great. I remind myself and my readers that true patience means being grateful to Allah even when affliction strikes, because afflictions should be viewed as expiation for sins and perhaps the cause for an increase in good deeds.

We believe in the following Hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) so our responses to the stressors in life should reflect this belief.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “How amazing are the believer’s affairs; all his affairs are good for him. If something good befalls him, he is grateful and that is good for him, and if he is afflicted by calamity he is patient and that is also good for him.” [Sahih Muslim]

Some verses in the Qur’an state that Allah was with Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his friend Abu Bakr when they were hiding in the cave, and Allah was with the believers in battle during the Prophet’s lifetime. In our lives, obedience starts with parents, elder relatives, and grandparents, then our teachers and tutors when we start going to school.

We learn obedience at an early age from our elders because we are confident that they know more than we do. This is the first step in our obedience to Allah. Obeying parents is part of obeying Allah. When we obey Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) there will be no inner struggle and conflict within ourselves.

As for the obedience of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), it is part of the obedience of Allah. This obedience means adherence to the prophet’s tradition, sunnah, and all what he established.
Obedience of Allah means to act on what Allah enjoins all of us to do in the Holy Qur’an and what His Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him), encouraged us to do in his sunnah.

In the Holy Qur’an obedience of the Prophet peace be upon him) is considered as the same as obedience to Allah. Muslims are told to take the Holy Qur’an and sunnah as their guides.

{He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah; but those who turn away – We have not sent you over them as a guardian.} (Chapter 4, verse 80)

Have you noticed that nowadays the majority of kids do not obey their parents? Children keep negotiating with their parents over every single order or demand they get from their parents or elders. Among the new generation, disobedience has become so common and it becomes even worse with teenagers.

If we start with obedience of family members and relatives in an early age, obeying Allah’s orders comes smoothly.
Islam builds a family in which the children’s obedience of the parents is expected. Children show respect to parents, and in return the parents must show caring, kindness, and mercy towards the children. Parents and children are bound together by love and mutual obligations. The Qur’an has made it compulsory for the child to obey parents and treat parents with goodness and kindness.
Parents are to be treated well at all times. The respect we ought to pay our parents has been emphasized in the Holy Qur’an.

{And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.} (Chapter 17, verse 23)
It is each Muslim’s responsibility to do their best to obey the orders of Allah set forth in the Holy Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Obedience of Allah brings provision and on the contrary, sin brings poverty. A person may be deprived of provision because of sins that he commits. Nothing brings provision like doing acts of obedience and avoiding sins. Nothing has been commanded by Allah or forbidden by Allah except that there is good and benefit in it for us, whether we understand the wisdom behind it or not.

With the advances in science, scientists have proven that all the regulations and orders given to us in regards to slaughtering animas for the meat we eat, for example, is the best way for our health. The ban on drinking alcohol has its benefits on our health, especially the liver. Waking up for Fajr prayers prevents from heart strokes or clots. There are hundreds of examples and we are still discovering medical and psychological benefits of so many things we are asked to do as Muslims.

In the early days of Islam, by obeying Allah’s orders, Muslims became healthier and more advanced than non-Muslims, and they went through a golden age. The Muslim community was brilliant; Muslims were on top of the fields of science, math, geography, astronomy, medicine, and more.

Our lives are determined by our choices; the best of these choices is the choice to obey Allah. When we submit to Allah, we are not going to have our rights abused; we are not going to lose out in any. We will be tested, but with patience and perseverance we will get through tests and tribulations.

By obeying and submitting to Allah, we stand to gain in ways that we will not expect nor foresee and the most important thing is to realize that the greatest success is to be granted Allah’s blessings in all aspects and throughout our lives.

SAUDI ARABIA has decided to lift from this year the reduction in the quota of Haj pilgrims imposed five years ago. It said the higher authorities approved a proposal by Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Naif, deputy premier and minister of interior who is also chairman of the Supreme Haj Committee, to restore the pilgrimage quota that existed prior to the cuts.

Minister of Haj and Umrah on Thursday thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, Crown Prince Muhammad, and Deputy Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman for lifting the reduction in the quota of both domestic and foreign pilgrims. He said that the concerned authorities have made preparations to receive the additional number of pilgrims for the forthcoming Haj. Bantan said this while receiving heads of Haj delegations from Arab and Islamic countries at his office in Jeddah.

The authorities imposed a 20 percent cut in the quota for foreign pilgrims coming from each country while the number of people allowed to perform Haj within the Kingdom was reduced by 50 percent to ensure the safety of pilgrims during the largest ever expansion in the history of the Grand Mosque, which is nearing completion, as well as the expansion of mataf (circumambulating area around the Holy Kaba) and massive projects at the Holy Sites.

Crown Prince Muhammad asked all concerned departments to get ready to receive a larger number of pilgrims for the upcoming Haj. He instructed to give the Haj missions opportunity to increase the number of pilgrims so as to restore the quota in a phased manner. The Crown Prince said that the exact number of pilgrims coming from each country will be decided by the Ministry of Haj and Umrah. However, he assured that the decided quota for every country will remain intact. Under the quota system that came into effect decades ago, a country is allowed to send only one Haj pilgrim for every 1,000 Muslim citizens.

A number of Haj missions in Jeddah congratulated the Saudi leadership for restoring the Haj quota. Speaking to Saudi Gazette, Indian Consul General Mohammed Noor Rahman Sheikh welcomed the decision, saying that it is a great move. “The Indian Haj Committee could accommodate only one fourth of the applicants after the quota cut. “The reduced quota for pilgrims under the Haj Committee was 100,020 but the number of applicants exceeded 400,000 last year. A total of 136,020 Indian pilgrims performed Haj during the last five years after imposition of a cut in quota in 2012, and they included 100,020 under Haj Committee and 36,000 who come through private tour operators,” he said. India’s quota for Haj-2012 was 170,000, but later the year the government reduced the quota by 20 percent.

Sheikh also said that launching of mobile app for Haj in India will be a further boost in streamlining the Haj operation.

“The app will complement with the integrated mobile app launched by the Jeddah Haj mission,” he said.

The Indian Haj Mission was the first foreign mission in the Kingdom to come up with an innovative Global Positioning System (GPS) application during the Haj of 2014.

India’s Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi launched at India’s Haj House in Mumbai last Monday the mobile application which will provide information and facilitate e-payments for the pilgrimage.

“It is for the first time that Haj application process is going to be digital,” Naqvi said. Applying for Haj, enquiry and information, news and updates and e-payment are the main features of the app. The application can be made directly on the app. Five adults and two infants can apply as a group.

As millions of Muslims around the world prepare to go on the Hajj, for Kansas City imam Bilal Hazziez the memories of performing the pilgrimage in 2012 remain strong, particularly as this year’s Hajj approaches. Hazziez, the resident imam of Al-Inshirah Islamic Center, describes going on the Hajj as life changing, saying that before he went, he believed in God but once there, he went from believing to actually knowing God. The experience of being one among millions of pilgrims from all walks of life, from the richest to the poorest, all dressed in white, all performing the same rituals, particularly touched him. “We are one single brotherhood, one single sisterhood,” says Hazziez, “You get that and you see that on the Hajj.”

Imam Hazziez went on the Hajj with his wife, Shahidah, and the two decided to document their journey in a video blog. The imam says at first it was a way to record his own emotions and save them for his children. Later, he realized that the blog could give everyone an in-depth, behind the scenes look at the experience, what it was like, for example, to see the Kaaba for the first time or to feel the sublime and peaceful atmosphere of Medina and visit the Prophet’s mosque. He thought by sharing his journey other Muslims who had not been on the Hajj might be encouraged to go.

A new public television documentary hopes that Muslims performing this year’s Hajj will be equally inspired to document their experiences. Taking a unique approach to filming this major religious event, the movie SACRED, a project of New York’s WLIW, is asking pilgrims traveling to Mecca to record and share their own video of the pilgrimage and its many rituals. The project is the first to use crowd-sourcing as a way of documenting religious and spiritual practice and people can submit footage they’ve shot with a video camera or even their phones.

SACRED will be a comprehensive film open to all who would like to contribute. It is not limited to American Muslims and anyone, whether they are performing the Hajj for the first time or are returning to Mecca, is encouraged to send in video. The filmmakers want to include as many diverse perspectives as possible. This project will allow Muslims to share their experiences and show fellow believers and those outside their faith the meaning of the Hajj and its importance in Islam. The SACRED producers believe those performing the Hajj are in the best position to give voice to what is truly sacred about this pillar of Islam. With this inclusive production model, the producers hope to create a personal and up-close view of sacred events, to capture what traditional filmmaking may miss. In the case of the Hajj, the film aims to go beyond the often seen images of millions gathering in Mecca to explore the individual spiritual moments that make this a life-transforming journey.

SACRED, which will document one year of religious and spiritual experience from June 2013 through June 2014, will include other Muslim holidays and rituals in addition to the Hajj. In July, the filmmakers captured observance of Ramadan around the globe, shooting on location in Istanbul, Cairo and South Africa. The film also hopes to make use of crowd-sourced footage of Ramadan observances and Eid ul-Fitr celebrations, which individuals can still submit. A selection of footage from the 365-day filming period will be edited together into a 90-minute film which will be offered to public television audiences across the United States. Contributors whose footage is selected will receive onscreen recognition.

Although the filmmakers are interested in major religious events like the Hajj, people are encouraged to submit any footage of an event they consider sacred, whether that’s a rite of passage, a daily ritual or a family tradition. As one of SACRED’s executive producers, William F. Baker explains, “The mission of SACRED is to promote peaceful coexistence by exposing the world to the beauty, uplifting power and thematic common ground of all religions and forms of spiritual expression.”

It seems the government’s recent decision to impose SR2,000 fee on pilgrims who perform Haj or Umrah more than once has not affected the inflow of visitors to the Two Holy Mosques at the start of this year’s Umrah season.

However, many pilgrims and Umrah operators requested the authorities to review the decision.

“It’s a big blow to Umrah operators,” said an agent of an Umrah service company from Kerala, which has sent thousands of pilgrims this season.

“We find it difficult to get pilgrims due to the new fee, which has increased the cost of an Umrah trip by Rs36,000,” said the agent.

He hoped that the Kingdom would withdraw the fee for the benefit of Umrah operators as well as Saudi businesses.

An elderly South African pilgrim, who introduced himself as Mohammed, said Saudi Arabia has every right to impose fee on pilgrims. However, he said the fee should be brought down to SR500.

“I have decided to come for Umrah every year irrespective of the cost it would incur. This is my 32nd Umrah,” Mohammed said while watching pilgrims circumambulate the Holy Kaaba.

“I manage to get the money required for visiting Makkah every year by the Grace of Allah.”

Zainul Abideen, a young Malaysian pilgrim who came for Umrah with his wife, was not happy with the fee, saying it would make Umrah unaffordable. “Many foreign pilgrims having low income like me wish to visit this holy place to pray to Allah and get His blessings,” he told Saudi Gazette.

He also agreed that Saudi Arabia has the right to impose fees for the services it offers.

“Even if it charges SR300 from every pilgrim it can make a good amount of money as more than seven million foreign pilgrims come for Umrah every year,” he pointed out.

Abideen has spent 14,000 ringgit (about SR11,700) for the Umrah trip of himself and his wife. “We came on a Saudia flight, which was full of pilgrims. This is our first Umrah and we are extremely delighted for getting an opportunity to make this wonderful spiritual journey,” he told Saudi Gazette sitting in the Grand Mosque.

Bangladeshi businessman Mohammed Shahidul Islam also expressed his hope that the Saudi government would lift the fee in order to encourage more faithful to visit Makkah and Madinah.

Asked about the response of Bangladeshi Muslims toward the Umrah fee, he said: “They are hopeful that Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman would revoke it for the benefit of all Muslims who dream to visit the holy places in Saudi Arabia.”

Saudi Gazette also met a group of young Indonesian pilgrims at the Grand Mosque, some of them have paid SR2,000 Umrah fee. They believe the fee would decrease the number of Indonesians going for Umrah.

“We hope King Salman would revoke the Umrah fee in response to the prayers and pleas of Muslims all over the world,” said Akbar, a member of the group.

Have you ever sat back and asked yourself, “Why should we follow the Sunnah?”

Perhaps you have gave it some though, and perhaps you have not.

Many people follow the way of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) or Islam for that matter without knowing why. To truly appreciate the religion and the Sunnah one should understand the reason behind such strict adherence.

Firstly, we follow the Sunnah because Allah has commanded us to do so. We comply with the orders of Allah without questioning it, since we have accepted Him to be our Lord. Thus He is Most Knowledgeable about our affairs and what would benefit us, and would only instruct us with what is best for us. Thus to follow the Sunnah is to observe Allah’s command and respect His authority.

Allah says in the Holy Qur’an, {He who obeys the messenger has indeed obeyed Allah…} (Chapter 4, verse 80)

Allah also says, {O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger…} (Chapter 4, verse 59)

Secondly, as Muslims we are obligated to love Allah. Thus, out of love for Allah, we love His Messenger and follow him.

“Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Chapter 3, verse 31)

Thirdly, Allah sent the messenger as a guide, to lead us to what is good and beneficial for us in this world and in the afterlife. Therefore, to gain the guidance one must follow the Sunnah.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a mercy for mankind. He reminded the people of Allah’s commands, gave them glad tidings of Paradise, and warned against the prohibitions of Allah and Allah’s wrath. Hence, it is only natural that we adhere to his Sunnah.

The Messenger was also a role model. Not only did he guide us to what was right and good in his Sunnah, but his actions and life is a role model for us, he set the standards which we must strive to attain.

{There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.} (Chapter 33, verse 21)

To follow the Sunnah is to uphold the deen. It is a form of preservation of our religion. To protect the Sunnah today, by adhering to it, is almost equivalent to protecting the person and body of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Lastly, Allah issues a stern warning against those who oppose the Sunnah.
{So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet’s order, lest fitnah [trials, afflictions, dissension] strike them or a painful punishment.} (Chapter 24, verse 63)

To conclude, following the Messenger and his Sunnah is an obligation upon us, and brings benefits to us in this life and the hereafter. The reasons behind following the Sunnah make it more beautiful and help us to appreciate the importance of the Sunnah. We need to give greater preference to the Sunnah in our daily lives, in everything we do and say.
