“The Black Stone came down from Paradise.”
It is also believed that the stone was white in color when it fell all the way from heaven but the sins of sons of Adam and Eve turned it black. According to the Hadith:
“It descended from Paradise whiter than milk, but the sins of the sons of Adam made it black”.
It was placed in the eastern corner of Ka’aba by our Prophet (PBUH) when he along with his companions rebuilt the Ka’aba. At that time, a fight erupted among the tribes about who will have the opportunity to place the blessed stone. Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) decided that the first person to enter Masjid al Haraam will place the stone. That person turned out to be the Prophet (PBUH) himself. He then ordered that the Holy stone would be placed on a sheet and one member of each tribe will hold the sheet from each corner. In this way, the stone was taken to its location where our Prophet (PBUH) took it in his hands, kissed it and placed it. Since that day, it has been on the same place.
Muslims kiss this black stone when they perform Tawaaf around Ka’aba. They do so because this stone was kissed by our Holy Prophet (PBUH). If a person is unable to kiss the stone because of the crowd, he may just touch it or point his hand towards it saying “Allahu Akbar.” Muslims should not fight among one another for reaching the stone.
This blessed stone has two miracles associated with it; it floats on water and does not get hot no matter how high the temperature might be. Our Prophet (PBUH) told:
“The black stone is Allah’s right hand on His earth. It will come on the day of resurrection with a tongue with which it will testify about those who kissed it in sincerity or otherwise. It does not sink in water and it does not get hot in fire.”
